“In our hearts, we keep the ones we love, for love itself lives on.” It has been months since the passing of Ellen M. Yarnell, yet the pain of her absence remains as poignant as ever. Born on November 7, 2004, in Altoona, PA, Ellen’s brief but beautiful life touched many, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and unyielding love that continues to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Ellen was a light in the lives of her family and friends, known for her warm smile and generous spirit. The daughter of Todd J. Yarnell and Rebecca L. (Langenbacher) Yarnell, and the beloved sister of Isaac Yarnell, Ellen was cherished by her entire family, including her great-grandfather Ron Wininger, her grandfather Michael Langenbacher, her great-aunts Janice Lindsey and Ronda Wininger, her uncles Larry and Waylon Yarnell, and her aunt Michelle Langenbacher. Her circle of love extended to numerous cousins and friends, all of whom felt the depth of her kindness and joy.
Ellen graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 2023, where she was an active participant in the school’s music and arts programs, playing in the band and expressing her creativity through visual arts. She was also a dedicated member of the Cross Country team, demonstrating her passion for both physical and artistic pursuits. Her love for learning and helping others led her to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where she was enrolled in the Cook Honors College and was in her second year of studying Speech and Language Pathology. Ellen’s academic dedication reflected her deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others, particularly through her chosen field of study.
Outside of her academic achievements, Ellen was deeply involved in her community. She actively participated in various campus activities, forming connections and making a positive impact wherever she went. Her personal interests were as diverse as her talents; she had a profound love for music and the arts, found joy in baking, and relished outdoor adventures. Ellen’s happiest moments were those spent with her family and her cherished dog, Luna. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was deeply involved in Young Life, a Christian youth organization that nurtured her spiritual growth and sense of purpose.
Ellen’s passing on May 29, 2024, following a brief battle with mental illness, was a loss that reverberated through her community. The grief felt by her family, friends, and the community of Hollidaysburg, PA, was shared by the broader Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) community. IUP President Michael A. Driscoll extended his condolences, and the university’s Council on Spiritual and Religious Life provided much-needed support during this difficult time. A memorial service was held on June 4, 2024, at Hicks Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Rich Morris, where those who loved her gathered to honor her memory. Contributions were requested to be made to Young Life in Hollidaysburg, PA, in her memory, reflecting Ellen’s deep commitment to her faith and her community.
Ellen is remembered for her radiant spirit, her dedication to her studies, and her unwavering commitment to her faith. Her legacy is one of kindness, compassion, and love—qualities that continue to inspire those who knew her. Though her time with us was short, the impact she made will be felt for years to come. Ellen’s memory lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her, a testament to the beautiful life she lived and the love she shared with the world.
“As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as we remember them.” Though Ellen is no longer with us, her presence remains in every heart she touched, a beacon of light that will never fade.
